From the desk of El Presidente

Hola, Amigos!  It's great to be President again.  It seems I have walked into another year when we may be lobbying to save our jobs.  So be it!

I wish to thank Susie Mason who has already stepped forward with grace and zest to pick up as Secretary.  She has volunteered to have "comment writing" meetings at her company's offices at which we can pool our ideas and design intelligent responses to uninformed legislative proposals.  If we work together we just might stay employed.

The NLA is talking about linking our monthly meetings via conference calls or internet with our Elko, Denver and any other constituents who might be interested (SEE ARTICLE – ELKO MEMBERSHIP MEETING/CONFERENCING BELOW).  There are some interesting possibilities out there! Call and tell us if you would be interested in linking up.

I also want to alert you to the fact that there is going to be a dance on the Saturday night after the Mining and Land Resource Institute in March (on March 18).  Plan to stay and join us!  The Landman Band will be playing, and a splendid time will be had by all.  (SEE ARTICLE – MALRI UPDATE BELOW).

Finally, let me say that I look forward to working with you all in this millenium.  Gold is up.  Pro-mining and pro-natural resource development legislators have a good chance of being elected this fall, and there is hope in the air.  Let's seize the moment and make the best of the brand new year.

Richard Thompson
President, Nevada Landmen’s Association 2000

!!!!!!!!!! MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL !!!!!!!!!!
It is time, once again, to renew your membership in Nevada Landmen’s Association.  The benefits of NLA membership include the monthly meetings, newsletter, listing in the NLA directory, up-to-date information on legislative and regulatory issues affecting the mining industry, and social events like the annual picnic and the upcoming Post-MALRI Bash.  Renewal is easy.  Simply click this membership renewal application to access the online application and send it with your $30 dues to:

Nevada Landmen's Association
P.O. Box 21351
Reno,  NV  89515-1351

The membership application is attached to the newsletters being faxed to those without e-mail.

We need your help in expanding the membership of NLA.  Please send the names of any persons not currently in the organization who should be contacted for possible membership to the NLA Secretary, Susie Mason at smason@nvlandman.org.  Better yet, give the potential member a copy of the membership application form direct with your invitation for them to join.  One member has already provided 60 names and addresses!!

DEADLINE FOR MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL: MARCH 18, 2000

This deadline enables publication of the directory as early in the year as possible.

WEBSITE UPDATE
TOO COOL!!  For those of you who have not yet done so, you really should surf the NLA Website – http://www.nvlandman.org.  Bill Houston, our resident Webmeister, is working constantly to keep the site interesting and up to date.  For example, did you know that the latest membership directory information for NLA is on the website?  Did you know that links have been created for numerous organizations and sites that benefit landmen?  The calendar of events keeps you current on all organizational activities.  Bill has added a “What’s New” page that is very informative.  Pictures from the last meeting are currently posted and can be accessed from the “What’s New” page.

WEBSITE SPONSORS:  At the January meeting, the membership voted to solicit corporate and individual sponsors for the NLA Web site.  Click this link NLA Web Sponsor Page for a demo.  Please take a moment to take a look at the demo page and read the additional information that can be found there.  The cost to be a Web site sponsor will depend upon the number of sponsors we are able to generate.  Initial response has been encouraging, and provided that we are able to get at least twenty sponsors, the cost should be closer to $100/year instead of the $200 initially proposed.  Proceeds from the sponsors will be used to defray the website hosting costs, monthly newsletter updates, and site upgrades.  We hope that you will see the value of advertising on the NLA WEB SPONSOR page, which will provide mutual benefits to your business as well as the Association.   Please contact Bill Houston at (775) 746-2434 or email at wghouston@juno.com with any questions and to reserve your ad space.

SEARCH ENGINES:  The membership also voted to list the NLA Web site  with major Internet search engines. Bill Houston is working on the set up for this.  Once listed with the search engines, Internet queries using a host of industry related key words (over 100 key words will be indexed for the site – ie: landman, mineral landman, mineral title, land, land status, NLA in all its variations, etc., etc.) should result in NLA site hits.  It was also decided at the last NLA meeting to password the NLA membership directory as it currently exists on the Web site prior to completing this capability.   This point may warrant some further discussion and comment.  If you have comments concerning these changes, please direct them to either Bill Houston at (775) 746-2434  or email at wghouston@juno.com or Susie Mason at (775) 824-4000 or email at smason@nvlandman.org

ELKO MEMBERSHIP MEETING/CONFERENCING
A number of the NLA members are located in Elko, Nevada.  Discussion is underway to have the Elko landmen meet on a regular basis.  The Reno members have also explored the possibility of conferencing the entire membership in on meetings – perhaps once a quarter.  Your interest in either of these possibilities needs to be communicated to either Richard Thompson at (775) 825-4300 or Barbara Bressler in Elko at (775) 738-2062 or email at bib@sierra.net.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN MINERAL LAW FOUNDATION
RMMLF is hosting a special institute on Air Quality Regulation for the Natural Resources Industry.  The Institute will be held on February 17-18, 2000 in Salt Lake City.  For more information, call the Foundation at (303) 321-8100, fax (303) 321-7657 or e-mail info@rmmlf.org.  Remember that RMMLF site can be accessed through a link on the NLA Links page.  The annual institute will be held in Vancouver, B.C. on July 20-22, 2000 in Vancouver, BC, Canada.  Lois Hall is the NLA’s newly elected Trustee Representative.

NLA has voted to purchase the RMMLF Digital Library on CD-ROM containing proceedings of all Special Institutes, Workshops and Annual Institutes.  The CD has search capabilities and will be available for checkout through the NLA Secretary. When the CD is available, the membership will be notified.

LEGISLATIVE MATTERS
The next comment deadline is for the 3809 regulations – February 23, 2000.  National Mining Association, Nevada Mining Association and others are currently developing talking points.  Another bulletin about the comments will be mass distributed to the membership through both e-mail and fax.  If you are not getting these bulletins (there have been two thus far), please let Susie Mason know.

MALRI UPDATE
REGISTER NOW:  The Mining and Land Resources Institute (MALRI) for 2000 is fast approaching.  Many thanks are due to the Chairman, Greg Ekins, and his committee for coming up with an incredible program.  You also should have received written notice about the institute and a registration form from the publicity chairman, Margie Winsel-Boorda. Registration forms are available on the website.  If you have any questions, please contact Greg Ekins at (775) 746-8803 or email at gelandman@aol.com.  Remember that the fee is $195 per person for AAPL members and $270 per person for nonmembers; however you will need to add $25 if your registration is received after 3/1/2000.

DRAWING FOR PAID MALRI REGISTRATION:  NLA will have a drawing to award the MALRI registration fee to either an independent landman or a company landman whose fees would not be reimbursed by their company.  If you want to be eligible for the drawing, please notify Greg Ekins at (775) 746-8803 or email at gelandman@aol.com.  The deadline for entry is February 25, 2000 so that the winner has time to make arrangements to attend.

TUITION ASSISTANCE:  In addition to the NLA drawing, AAPL makes tuition assistance available for those who need it.  See the registration form and check the box for “Tuition Assistance”.  In other words, please do not let cost keep you from attending.

RAFFLE ITEMS:  Tom Roesch (775) 625-5621 has notified everyone of the need for donations to the annual raffle.  Please let Tom know what you or your organization can contribute to the raffle.

POST-MALRI BASH:  Yes, it is true!  The Christmas/Valentine’s Day/St. Patrick’s Day/Aruba National Anthem & Flag Day Party has been scheduled for the Saturday following the MALRI Institute – March 18, 2000.  It will be held at the Hidden Valley Country Club with cocktails at 6:30 p.m., a buffet dinner at 7:30, followed by dancing with the Landman Band until midnight.  The cost will be $20 per person (Executive Committee meeting tonight).  More information can be found on the announcement and RSVP form.
