From the desk of El Presidente

Greetings members!  And I say that in a dwindling voice because many of you have not renewed your memberships!  Remember!  The deadline is NOW!  Only 40 of last year's 67 members have responded so far.  Please, send in those renewals!  Things are tight, but join in.

I want to say that this year's Mining and Land Resources Institute at the Peppermill was another big success.  The speakers were great, and everyone had a marvelous time.  Particularly Susie Mason who won every other doorprize in the raffle!  (How does she do that?)

The dance on Saturday was a splendid event too!  We had over 60 people attend, and the Landman Band was in fine form.  The Greater Reno Carlos Santana Rhythm Section composed of, Anita Berry, Greg Ekins, Richard Thompson and Tracy Guinand provided extra percussion help.  There was dancing and dinner and laughter, and a bar hosted by Eklund Drilling.  Thank you Eklund Drilling!  The talk is that the NLA/GSN are going to make the dance after MALRI an annual event.  Perhaps we can move it to Friday night next year so more people from out of town can stay to attend.  The more the merrier.

Speaking of annual events, the bar-b-que hosted by yours truly was a truly fun occasion; with good food, good company, and some great pool being played after dinner.  I hope to make it an annual event as well.  That way we can start MALRI with a bar-b-que and end with it a dance every year!  I want to thank Marty Miller and Sylvia Good for their assistance in organizing the event, fixing that incredible menu and being duly impressed with my pots and pans.  I also want to give special thanks to Sylvia Good for teaching me what cilantro is and to Conn Davis for his assistance at the bar-b-que.

Tracy Guinand has found excellent speakers for this month's meeting, and I hope you will attend if you are in town.

Buenos Dias,

rkt

NLA WEB NEWS

GREETINGS NLA WEBBERS & WEBBIES - The NLA Web-site has had 1100 plus hits since we started tracking stats in January 2000.   This indicates that the NLA membership is making good use of the resources offered through their Web-site. As well we hope that the Web-site will broaden the exposure of NLA efforts beyond its immediate membership base.   The NLA Web-site is now cross-linked with many industry-related sites, and efforts will continue to expand our exposure in this manner.  Please suggest any sites where you think a NLA link would be appropriate and we will try to get linked.   Search engine registration efforts also continue.

We are all glad to hear that Mike Hamilton's father came through quadruple bypass surgery and is doing well.  For those of you that don't know Mike, he provides technical assistance to NLA in maintaining the Web-site and electronic communications.  Mike is also a NLA WEB SPONSOR.  Although Mike's scheduled presentation at MALRI 2000 entitled "Web Sites and Mining the Internet" had to be cancelled due his father's surgery, his paper that was included in the Institute manual contains a lot of useful Internet information.  So take a bit of time to review the paper and get some useful tips.   As well, the paper addresses some current issues regarding Internet privacy that you may want to be aware of.   Thanks for the contribution Mike.

A number of new links have been added to the Links Page this month.   You may find the link to the Interior Board of Land Appeals - IBLA, contributed by Ed Jackson (thanks Ed), particularly useful.   Take a bit of time to go through the new links and see what they have to offer.  We are always looking for new resources to add to the Links Page.  Please share any sites that you think would be useful to the membership, and feel free to suggest other link categories you would find useful to be included on the links page. For quick reference make sure to bookmark the Links Page, or even better add the bookmark to the Personal Toolbar Folder in Netscape or the Links Tab on the Internet Explorer address bar.

LEGISLATIVE MATTERS
Comment Deadline(s) Upcoming:

Federal Register, March 3, 2000, Vol. 65, No. 43, 11676: Concerns the National Forest Service’s conclusion that “it must thoroughly review its forest road system policy”.  Please use your Links page of the Website to get to the Federal Register and print a copy of the proposed rules.  The comment deadline is May 2, 2000 and you will have bullet points sooner than you did for 3809!!  Maybe!!!!

The Women’s Mining Coalition made a trip to Washington, D.C. the week of March 20-24, 2000.  A group of 35-40 women and men met with almost 200 staff members, primarily from the House of Representatives. We talked about 3809, the millsite opinion and  (a new one for the hard-rockers) mountaintop mining for coal.  It was a wonderful experience to continue to present the face of modern mining and be able to demonstrate that mining affects the entire country.  National Mining Association provided us with statistics about mining and mining related jobs, companies and gross revenues on a district by district basis.  That information was eye opening to almost everyone we met.  It did not hurt that gasoline prices are up and everyone is now realizing that without exploration, new domestic reserves are not being discovered and developed.  By the way, gas is about $1.50 per gallon back there.  Those of us paying over $2.00 a gallon had to smile.

It ain’t over till it’s over!
