From the desk of El Presidente

Dear Members:

Judging by the attendance at our last meeting, lots of people are working.  Good News!  However, if you are in town, please plan to attend the upcoming and future meetings. Additional Good News - We have more members this year than last year so things aren’t necessarily as bad as we thought they were.  We intend to continue our drive to increase our membership and we hope we can pick up some additional members as well.

The next monthly meeting is Friday May 19, 2000.   Our speaker will be Dr. John Coles, a Career Counselor with Truckee Meadows Community College.  Dr. Coles has his Ph.D. in Career Counseling from Oregon State and has 26 years of experience in the profession.  He will be reviewing TMCC’s “One Stop Shop” for assessing job skills, reviewing alternatives and making career changes.  Although it is unfortunate that our industry is undergoing difficult times, speakers like Dr. Coles can help us make the best of resources available to us if a career change is required.

By the way, for those who were not able to attend our last meeting, the speakers were fantastic!  John Whitney and Frank Pindal of Itronics Inc. brought new ideas about ways to deal with cyanide issues and possible rays of hope for mining even in the face of the anti-cyanide movements that are underway.  Their web site is http://www.itronic.com.  Please plan to visit the web site and find out more about their innovative solutions.

Buenos Dias,

rkt

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF PROFESSIONAL LANDMEN

NLA voted to contribute $400 to the AAPL Education Fund at the last business meeting.  We are appreciative of all that AAPL does to advance our profession and appreciate the educational opportunities that membership in AAPL affords us.

As mentioned in the April newsletter, Rob Berry, RPL, with Land Management Services and NLA’s member of the AAPL Board of Directors, will be attending the annual AAPL meeting and Board of Directors’ meeting in June.  If you have any issues you want discussed with the Board concerning AAPL, please let Rob know.  You can reach Rob at 775-825-6488 or via e-mail at rberry@lmsgis.com.  Rob has been asked to inquire about AAPL’s Job Bank, which has been under construction on the AAPL web site.

Mining and Land Resources Institute Chairman Edd Jackson, CPL, with Franco Nevada Mining Company announced that Richard Moorhead, CPL, Manager of Lands, U.S. for Newmont Mining Corporation, will be the Assistant/Incoming Chairman for the 2001 Mining and Land Resources Institute.  Thanks very much, Richard!  Please plan to give Edd and Richard the same support and assistance as our past Chairmen have received.  The tentative dates for MALRI are March 15 and 16, 2001 at the Peppermill in Reno.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN MINERAL LAW FOUNDATION
The annual institute will be held in Vancouver, B.C. on July 20-22, 2000 in Vancouver, BC, Canada. For more information, call the Foundation at (303) 321-8100, fax (303) 321-7657 or e-mail info@rmmlf.org. Remember that RMMLF site can accessed through a link on the NLA Links page.

LEGISLATIVE MATTERS
On April 17-18, 2000, Marcia deBraga, Nevada State Assemblyman, and Nevada State Senator Dean Rhoads cosponsored the Nevada Land Use Summit.  Over 200 people from all perspectives attended this meeting at which a number of state and national politicians spoke and contributed input.  Several members of NLA including Russ Fields-President of Nevada Mining Association, Brian Iverson-Manager of Land Affairs for Placer Dome U.S. Inc., Edd Jackson and Deborah Goetz-CPL and Independent Landman, attended this event and reported favorably on the concept.

On May 3, 2000, there was a joint public lands committee meeting with representatives of Nevada Mining Association, Northwest Mining Association, California Mining Association, Colorado Mining Association, Alaska Mining Association and National Mining Association.  The meeting was well attended and generated many good ideas and concepts.

You will be notified when the revised 3809 regulations are published for final comment.

ADDITIONS & CORRECTIONS TO

We welcome Russ Fields and Paul Scheidig with Nevada Mining Association as new members of NLA. Correction for Jim Dodds – address should be Cueva Del Oso NE.
