A Bit Late
I wrote the following while in Billings last month, a BLM employee emailed
it for me on a UNIX station - it never made it to Doug H. for the September
newsletter.
September 1999
Notes from the President
A warm rain fell through the evening air as the cabby drove through
town. A warm rain - I had not envisioned that sort of weather.
The airline had brought me to Billings via Salt Lake. While at the
edge of the brine long shadows crept across the valleys from the mountains.
The sunset was remarkable – even spiritual – I had not envisioned that
sort of sunset. I have seen a lot of sunsets.
In the terminal a familiar and happy face caught my eye - Margie Winsel
was waiting for a flight to Lead, we exchanged a few brief words as I hurried
off to gate E12. I pondered the ludicrousness of how running to a
gate can make up for a late plane - that was flying at 500 mph...
We live in a remarkable age, as part of a remarkable society.
Thought I would take the time to smell the roses, of course when I get
home I will have to mow the lawn! See you at the next meeting.
Enjoyed the annual Galena Picnic thanks to all who came and helped !!
October 1999
Wow, what a difference a month makes. Most of the central banks
and the I.M.F. have signed on to limiting gold sales and those who have
not hold about 10% of the bullion. Copper is moving up due to supply
and demand as well as industry consolidation factors. The commodity
index continues to rise boding well for other commodities. The future...
looks pretty good. The central bank scenario is similar to that of
2 1/2 years ago, before the Australians and others sold central bank bullion.
Before BreX. Before gold fell below $360. Provided the prices
hold up the producers will begin to spin off cash and the non-producers
may be able to generate some I.P.O. money.
The current situation is still pretty grim. Many members of the
N.L.A. are unemployed or underemployed. A number of the jobs are
gone and not coming back. (Bruce Springsteen) To help
protect our future we must remain vigilant and abbreviate black sheep mining
operators whenever they arise.
The NLA is working through this slump and I offer for your perusal the
official N.L.A. website at http://nvlandman.org.
This website is primarily the work of Bill Houston who has done one heck
of a job. Do yourself a favor and log on, check out all the links,
dancing hearts, and whistles!! Thank you Bill!!
The monthly meetings of the NLA are continuing to be held on the third
Friday of each month at Ol' Rutherford's on Nugget near McCarran.
The MALRI meetings are now being held monthly and will be until the
event takes place on March 16 and 17. The executive meetings are
being held immediately prior to the MALRI meetings. We are currently
putting together our list of speakers and topics. Any suggestions?
Give me a call or drop me a line via the snazzy email set up on the NLA
website.
The officer search committee is looking for a few good land-persons
to head up the organization for the coming year. Please give Dan
Schneider or myself a call with your eagerly anticipated announcement of
candidacy!
